What is the approach/type of research?

The analyzed article used a case study by Gitto, L., & Trimarchi, E. (2016) titled When passion becomes a nightmare: The burnout syndrome in healthcare workers. This was an exploratory research. The authors sought to identify the causes of burnout among nurses

What was the aim/purpose/objective of this research?

The authors asserted that healthcare professionals are the most affected by burnout than any other profession. Hence, the study suggested that describing burnout in identifying the variables correlated with burnout development is important. Doing so would make it possible to identify employees that suffer from burnout and, consequently, set up intervention strategies.

How was the study done?

A random selection of nurses working in private and public hospitals was conducted. A final sample of 50 units was reached. Participants were subjected to face-to-face interviews and were later administered a questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to collect information on nurse burnout. The authors used a shorter questionnaire version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and employed Stata 10.0 for data analysis.

What were the significant findings of the research?

Some variables were positively correlated to burnout: age and number of years a nurse had spent in the profession. Conversely, being single had a negative correlation, and so too was having a temporary contract, which both had a lower risk of nurse burnout.

The results of the study can be used to inform the Human Resource Department about nurse recruitment. Additionally, the information can be used in advising supervisors on staff scheduling to ensure that the departments are not understaffed at any given time.
