Worldview Foundations of Spirituality and Ethics

Worldview Foundations of Spirituality and Ethics

The aspect of the topic readings that I found interesting is the challenging ethos of scientism and relativism. Scientism holds the belief that science provides the ultimate platform for gaining knowledge. In so doing, scientism disregards everything that is not known scientifically. On the other hand, relativism holds the belief that there is no universal truth in something. Relativism argues that claims of truth or reality are relative to a particular individual or society. Scientism is faced with a major dilemma: failure to make moral and ethical judgments. When moral and ethical judgments are made, the fact claims are evaluated. Therefore, scientism fails to evaluate what ought to be the case of the mere facts presented.

The article evaluates disease and healing from the perspective of the foundations of Christian spirituality. Two main attitudes are entailed in the foundations of Christian spirituality. Science is acknowledged as a knowledge subset. The second attitude entailed in Christian spirituality is the worth of God’s creation. Humans are regarded to be bearers of intrinsic worth and dignity. The foundations of Christian spirituality in healthcare incorporate God’s knowledge and purposes. The need for collaboration among healthcare providers, the clergy, and theologians is advocated for.

I agree with the article’s analysis of disease and healing. Holistic care should be provided to the patient. Holistic care entails catering to the patient as a whole and fulfilling his or her needs (Frisch & Rabinowitsch, 2019). The spiritual needs of the patient should be addressed. The foundations of Christian spirituality should be used if the patient has Christian beliefs. The healthcare provider should interact with various professionals, such as the clergy, to ensure the patient’s needs are fulfilled (Pentaris, 2019). Scientific evidence-based nursing practice should be used in concert with the patient’s spiritual beliefs. Respecting the patient’s spiritual beliefs makes him or her feel appreciated and participate in their treatment plan decision-making.
