Week 4-Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal

Week 4-Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal

The discussion I had with my preceptor on Ethical considerations in health care was very productive. Medical ethics refers to a set of etiquette rules adopted by healthcare providers to regulate professional conduct with patients and general society. Healthcare providers constantly experience ethical dilemmas while caring for patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes. This can be attributed to the increase in the number of diabetes cases nationwide. These ethical issues include indulging and addressing research barriers such as data analysis on the impact of patients on diabetes-related genes. Other concerns are new technology in diabetes management, conflict of interest in research and medicine, understanding the rights of diabetes patients who accept to participate in diabetes-related research, access to appropriate health care services, and discrimination against diabetes patients (Zowgar, A. M. et al., 2018)

Researchers have constantly ensured quality health care for diabetes patients through self-management. Self-efficacy has been reported as an important concept in diabetes management through patient empowerment to be more active. Healthcare professionals, together with diabetes patients, ought to respect this disease to prevent it from dominating the patient’s life. This can be achieved by normalizing the diabetes management process and advocating for lifestyle changes in diabetes patients and people who are at risk of developing the disease (Awadalla H. et al., 2017)

The diabetes care plan should be individualized to cater to the needs of the patients individually. A multidisciplinary team, therefore, will not only strengthen diabetes self-care practice but also safeguard and maintain the quality of healthcare interventions for the patients. “The Logic of Care,” augmented by Mol’s field research, should be the foundation of healthcare providers managing diabetes patients. Healthcare providers should always aim at patient satisfaction as it is the measure of the quality of service rendered to the patients (Ingham-Broomfield, R. 2017).
