Case C Discussion Response

Share additional interview and communication techniques that could be effective with your colleague’s selected patient.

I would also ask the teen if they are experiencing any form of emotional problems. Mental health among teens is a critical area that needs to be addressed. Teenagers go through several psychological and physical changes that, if not properly and successfully addressed, can lead to unhealthy mental statuses. For example, a teen may have low self-esteem following changes he experiences in his body and thus can cause him to have a negative body image. To ensure patient confidentiality and autonomy, I would ask the patient’s parents not to be present as I interview the patient. I would administer the Teen Functional Assessment Tool, a self-assessment tool that will provide more information on the teen and his psychological/emotional state (Hoare et al., 2016).

Suggest additional health-related risks that might be considered.

The teen may be at risk of eating disorders. Anorexia and Bulimia are less frequently reported among teen boys compared to teen girls. The patient may have issues accepting the changes that come with adolescence, such as weight gain, and with that, he may adopt unhealthy eating habits. Therefore, I would check his weight and BMI and inquire about his eating habits to ensure that he is within the normal and acceptable ranges (Rosewall et al., 2019)

Teens that are anorexic or bulimic are also depressed. According to Etemad (2018), having the parents on board during the treatment plan is very useful as they can act as monitors when it comes to the patient’s nutritional intake. Additionally, encouraging the patient to get more involved in social activities rather than spending time on social media can help the patient to form new friendships and acquire new skills and hobbies. Social media addiction is correlated to negative self-image among teens. In this case, the patient and the parent will be given information on which teen clubs the patent can be a part of, and preferably have the father participate as a club member as well.
