Concept Exploration: Maslow’s Theory

Maslow’s theory is a hierarchy of needs type of motivational theory. It was developed by Abraham Maslow, who believed that psychological needs trigger the decisions made by human beings (Healy, 2016). Therefore, for one to progress to the next level of need, he or she must be able to successfully go through the lower level of need or satisfy the lower need.

The five stages of this theory are as follows: psychological needs, safety needs, needs for love and belonging, needs for esteem, and needs for self-actualization. The levels can be divided into two, and these are deficiency needs and growth needs (Noltemeyer et al., 2020). The top level, which is self-actualization, is called being needs, while the other four levels are called deficiency needs. Deficiency needs are triggered by deprivation, and once these needs are not met, a stronger urge to fulfill them is felt. This lasts for as long as the needs are denied.

The two concepts of this theory that will be explained are physiological and safety needs. Physiological needs are more important since they aid in survival and must be met. They include biological needs such as food, shelter, air, clothing, warmth, and sleep (Baqutayan et al., 2015). If they are not satisfied, then human functionality is reduced. Consequently, if one successfully goes through the physiological needs stage, they graduate to safety needs. People at this level start to feel the need for security. They strive to control, foresee, and have order in their lives. Society, which includes business and school, aids in these. Failure to successfully complete the level leaves one confined in financial instability and disorder.

Choose a theory from your undergraduate education in any discipline. It should be a commonly used theory for the general public such as Maslow, Darwin, Descartes, or others you used in physiology courses, chemistry, business courses, etc. Do not use a nursing theory. Provide the theory in your response. Identify the two concepts and the proposition between them. Explain the concepts. How might the terms used differ from the general use of the term?
