My ethical theory is founded on honesty and self-discipline. Self-discipline indicates that people control their emotions and act correctly even when no one is watching. As a result, self-discipline is an ethical virtue everyone should strive for. On the other hand, honesty is the foundation of integrity and advocates for sincerity and truthfulness in a relationship, which translates to trust. The natural law and Aristotle’s golden rule are two ethical theories that I strongly support. Aristotle’s golden rule, according to Rachels and Rachels (2019), is a formulation that focuses on an individual’s character and the good qualities they possess. Furthermore, natural law ethical theory contends that people are born with instincts that help them distinguish between right and wrong and what is moral and immoral (Rachels & Rachels, 2019).

According to my ethical theories, John Does’s actions are immoral and unethical in the given case. This is because John knew what he was doing (illegally downloading the copyrighted textbook) was wrong. As a result, his act of downloading copyrighted textbooks may be viewed as deceptive and extremely wrong. Furthermore, because John Doe is a believer, we can see that he rejected his beliefs by doing what his faith forbids because one of the commandments states, “Do not steal.” In this case, the moral aspect is that these actions were viewed as right and accepted by the majority.
According to Schildberg-Hörisch (2019), the veil of ignorance is a social contract theory concept that allows people to evaluate concepts by imagining themselves hidden behind a veil and knowing nothing about themselves. By aiming for equality in all ethical situations, this method promotes fairness. Doe’s act is rendered null and void when this approach is used. This is because it could be argued that Doe comes from a low-income family and could not afford the materials.

Some people believe you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one looks. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe will take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak”, as in a cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that people of lower socioeconomic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from downloading this application in this manner. John Doe is focused on his economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.
