Personal Nursing Philosophy

Personal Nursing Philosophy

My nursing philosophy is to serve the community by providing holistic, competent care to my patients, regardless of their economic or social standing, doing so with respect, compassion, and empathy. There is one nursing theory that most resonates with my view of nursing practice; Jean Watson’s Theory of Philosophy and Science of Caring. She theorized that caring is “central to nursing practice, and promotes health better than a simple medical cure”. I believe that we as nurses must use or at least try a holistic approach with our patients, not only treating their medical problems or diagnosis but also treating the person as a whole. There are four concepts included in Watson’s model; they are the human being, health, environment, and nursing. The personal aspect of this model moves beyond the patient but also extends to the family and friends that are important to the patient. By taking care of those that are with the patient, the patient will generally become more comfortable and, in many cases, less stressed. The environmental aspect of Jean’s theory encircles the patient’s surroundings, economic conditions, and cultural and social considerations that may affect the patient. When addressing a patient’s health related to Watson’s model, it is important to consider physical health as well as emotional health, mental health, and the patient’s spiritual well-being. Being able to ensure a holistic approach to each facet of their health can maximize the patient’s “health.” The last concept of Watson’s model is nursing. Nursing incorporates the actions of the nurse to provide safe, effective, and competent care to their patients. It also involves using critical thinking and applying the nursing process.

As a nurse, I believe that it is important that we treat our patients with respect and that we always give compassionate care unrestricted by considerations of their social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of their health problems. I also believe that it is very important that we, as nurses, look beyond any differences we may have with the patient and provide non-judgmental care. We should take the time and recognize each patient as an individual and that each individual will have different needs. I also respect that each patient has the right to autonomy, and I will always respect and support the patient’s right to make his or her own decisions, whether I agree with them or not. I also think that it is imperative that respect and compassion extend beyond patients and their families and also to my colleagues.
