Addressing the issue of Nursing Shortage
Nursing shortage is a challenge that is affecting a lot of healthcare facilities. Different departments in healthcare organizations, such as the ICU and the perioperative departments, need specialized nurses, who are not enough. One strategy to deal with the nursing shortage in the various departments is nursing education and training. Training nurses who have not specialized in areas such as perioperative can help cover the shortages in the areas. Policies on nursing education and nursing, such as training all nurses in certain skills, can also help in addressing the challenges.
The journal “Addressing the perioperative nursing shortage through education” by Beitz (2019) highlights the problem of nursing shortage in the perioperative department and the solution to the problem. According to Beitz (2019), there is a shortage of perioperative nurses because very few nursing schools prepare nurses for specialized positions, and a lot of specialized nurses are retiring (Beitz, 2019). It takes a long time to fill the vacant positions and is also costly. In the journal, Beitz (2019) states that the solution to the nursing shortage in different departments, such as perioperative departments, is educating and training the nurses (Beitz, 2019). Nurse education and training at healthcare facilities and academic levels equip general nurses to work in areas requiring specialization (Haddad, Annamaraju & Toney-Butler, 2020). The journal highlights the clinical implications of nurse education in covering the shortage and improving patient outcomes.
One of the nursing conferences where the issue of nurse shortage can be addressed is the COVID-19 Care nursing conference. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in nursing shortages, especially in ICU, due to increased cases. Therefore, one aim of the conference is to address the issue of nursing shortages and how to deal with work overload. One of the solutions that can be discussed during the conference is the education of nurses at both facility-level and academic levels. Specialized nurses in various departments can train other general nurses to help cover the shortages in the various departments.
