MGT 315 Lifetime Employability Essay
When it comes to employability, schooling and experience are the two most important things that employers will look at to make a decision. I would say that most people do not just go to school for enjoyment, although some do, most of the time it is to further their career. When it comes to me, I am pursuing my degree in Business Management to propel my career to the next level. I have been working since I was 14, and there are a lot of things in the workforce that I have found to help and hurt your resume and employability. From critical thinking all the way to communication, it is all-important to excel in a long-term career. Employability is the key to having a long successful career, and if you have good employability, then you will never be out of a job.
When looking at skills for being successful in the workplace, one thing always comes forward, and that is the ability to utilize critical thinking. In my current role, I am constantly working with people, and that requires a lot of decision-making and critical thinking. I am a supervisor, so when I utilize this, I am generally making a customer service decision or helping my agents troubleshoot a customer issue since we are in tech support. I was an agent here before I was a supervisor, and my ability to be able to put myself in the customer’s shoes and be able to visualize what they are explaining and use that to help troubleshoot is one of the main things that made me a top agent and get promoted. “Using a structured thinking process will actually save employees time in the long run because they avoid making mistakes such as jumping to the wrong conclusion or making a decision that others reject down the road.” (Fallon 2014) When it comes to getting promoted, I always made sure that I employed certain professional principles at work, and I think that has really made a difference. The three things I do that help me in my professional life are always segmenting work from my personal life, always being hungry and taking care of my people. The first one is key because everyone has things that are going on outside of work, and it is really easy to let them affect your work and vice versa, so it is key to have that segregation in your life so that you do not get burnt out on either front. “Consider all the things that compete for your time, and decide what to keep and what to discard.” (Smith 2013) When I refer to staying hungry, I mean never settling and always pushing yourself for the better. I am always looking for ways to move forward in my career, and I never want to be complacent. When it comes to taking care of my people, a supervisor is only as good as their team. Too many times, supervisors forget about their team when they are trying to move up, but it is key to develop your team, and that will actually help you move up quicker than if you did not. These are keys to my professional life.
There are also several other items that make someone overly employable and one key one is communication. A worker has to always be able to communicate not only with the people below them but with the people above them. The way I accomplish this is I am very open and very vocal. I do not like to water anything down. I speak my mind to people that work for me and the people I work for, and that way, they always know what I am thinking and what I am all about. “It is absolutely critical to be as direct, to the point and concise as possible.” (Adams 2013) Transparency is key to communication. One area I need to work on is time management. I tend to work on things as they come, and that is not always a good route to take, especially when managing others. The things that I have done that work is I develop my team so that I have team leads within my team so that I can delegate out some of the smaller tasks, which helps them develop and get recognized, and it saves me time. I am always trying to move up, so staying on task is easy, and I am always doing extra so that my managers see me as the potential next in line for promotions.
Employability is the key to having a long successful career, and if you have good employability, then you will never be out of a job. There are tons of different aspects that go into being a highly employable person. It requires a combination of everything that was discussed and not just one thing. I am still working on several aspects of my employability, but I believe I have a strong employability profile, and I will only continue to grow. From my critical thinking skills to my communication, I will never stop developing until I reach my long-term career goals.
