The healthcare systems have been impacted by new Technology, which has changed the way we live our lives every day (Western University,2020). New Technology has changed the quality of documentation, led to more cost-effective care, and increased patient-care efficiencies in health care. Reliable information has become both fast and easy to access due to these advancements in information technologies. As a result, nursing informatics has become a fundamental part of all nursing practice (Juparinejad et al.,2020). Nurses, as well as all health care providers, need support from nurse informatics to provide evidence-based care to patients.

Web-based portals enable the patient to access their health record from anywhere with internet access. These portals serve as two-way communications between patients and healthcare providers. Patient portals have helped to increase patient Knowledge and participation in the decision-making process. Nurse informatics plays a role in designing and creating a website that encourages patient engagement and management of their health and medical conditions, which hopefully results in improved clinical outcomes.

I am writing a proposal for my organization to improve the patient portal, which is an internet-based interaction website for the patient to communicate with their healthcare provider. one of the most important and convenient sources for most adults to look for health-related information, support, and services through the Internet that available and affordable for everyone (Tao et al., 2018). Patient who actively accesses their healthcare information and participates in subsequent decisions regarding their health have better disease management. Providing dialysis patients with portal access to their health records will help them improve their health, monitor their lab results, manage fluid gain between treatments, follow the right diet, request a Prescription refill for their medication, obtain educational resources, request extra treatment if needed, and ask questions through secure e-mail.

Mobile device expansion has an opportunity to use these devices in addressing health care needs with the multiple uses of technologies that include interactive voice response calls, short message services, and smartphones, exiting across regions and markets. The use of mobile phones offers access to high-quality health information. Mobile health apps help in reducing hospital readmission (Ng et al.,2018).

The overall goal is to increase patient engagement in and ownership of their health. With mobile access, patients can access the portal through smartphones or tablets when not on the computer (Edelson, PCC.com). Also, documentation in the record using patient-centered language that is understandable to patients increases patient loyalty and increases the organization’s value (Mayhew et al.,2018). Portals serve as a means of two-way communication between patients and healthcare professionals.

Studies show that health portals, which are one type of nursing informatics, could meet the growing demand for healthcare services and help with nursing practice. Health portals help educate patients with a large body of health information, improve self-care skills and medical decision-making, and help the patient maintain good physical, psychological, and social well-being (Tao et al.,2018). Patient portals are secure online websites that are part of the electronic health record and are the only way patients can access their health information and health professional notes. By accessing their health information, patients feel more engaged in managing their health condition and appreciate a better way to interact and collaborate with their healthcare team. A study of chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, and depression, found that the portal was effective in improving chronic disease outcomes (Mayhew et al.,2018).

The stakeholders who will impact by this project include patients and their families, clinical leader, administrator, and nurse informatics. Nurse informatics plays an important role in an address in design and delivery of health applications through the combination of clinical insight and technology skills. A collaboration from stakeholders that include patients, providers, and practice leadership can increase patient portal enrollment (patient engagement,2016). The researchers said healthcare organizations could establish creative and individualized enrollment tactics. Patient engagement in their health can improve one’s health, reduce cost and readmission to hospitals, increase patient satisfaction, and enrich healthcare data, portals, and mobile devices to support patient engagement (Abdelhak,2016).

Patient portals improve patient outcomes and efficiency by connecting patients with care resources in a convenient, safe, and secure environment. Benefits also include reduced expenses associated with manual printing, scanning, and faxing of documentation, including paper and ink costs, as well as office maintenance (care resource,2018). Patient portals help encourage better physician-patient relationships and give the patient more control over their treatment. The patient can write down their concerns in their own words, which is often easier to articulate once they’ve had time to think about an issue or problem. Patients often forget to ask questions in person or think of a question later, so the portal allows them to reach out to their healthcare provider at any time. Patient satisfaction and customer retention. This could easily improve with the implementation of a patient portal, which would offer real-time and on-demand access to their healthcare team. Research has shown that when patients are engaged in their car, their quality of life improves, and money is saved by both the consumer and the provider. However, to be engaged in their care, patients need the right resources to make this happen. This is where nurse informatics can play a role. To maximize patient engagement in portal usage, nursing informatics will need to play a role in shaping the patient portal and ensuring that they are combined with another system, such as electronic health records (UIC,2020).

Nurse informatics competencies include project management skills which are critical for improving quality outcomes and safety for patients. Nursing informatics (NI) combines nursing science with information and analysis. It defines, manages, and communicates data, information, Knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. To achieve desired outcomes, NI support nurses, consumer, patients, the healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision–making (Sipes,2016).

Health apps keep patients engaged in their care when they are away from the hospital or doctor’s office. These apps work by analyzing and leveraging user data to identify challenges and create solutions. Nurse informatics keeps this application effective as possible.

Conclusion

Evidence exists that patient portals improve healthcare outcomes and costs. The widespread availability of the Internet has increased patient knowledge and increased participation in decision-making. Nursing informatics provides a mechanism for patients to provide their clinical information and to share it with family. This information enables the patient to be in control of their health. Mobile health apps, combined with telehealth and remote patient monitoring approaches, are effective in the management of many diseases and are designed to reduce hospital readmissions (NG et al.,2018). The patient portal is an efficient way of communication that improves the quality of care. Nurse informatics plays a role in the design and implantation of strategies for health care applications.
