Examining Nursing Specialties
The current healthcare system is changing drastically toward the achievement of quality service provision (Graham et al., 2020). Nursing is at the center of this change, and as a result, I could not be left behind in advancing the nursing profession toward better healthcare services. Consequently, I have always wanted to understand the reasons behind the increasing number of mentally ill patients among both the adult and children populations. As such, I decided to enroll in MSN informatics and plan to do psychiatry nursing practice. In the course of this program, my main objective is to adopt the necessary competencies and skills required to help in managing patients with mental disorders.
It was quite difficult to choose the most appropriate program to join, given the huge number of alternatives. However, even as an undergraduate, I always spent more time in the psychiatry unit than in any other department. Hence, it came to me quite early enough on what to specialize in while advancing my career in nursing. Although it takes quite a lot of dedication to meet all the academic requirements to become a psychiatric nursing practitioner, I am prepared to take it (Graham et al., 2020). Attaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing was a start, and now enrolling in a master’s program will even push me further toward my goal of becoming a psychiatric nursing practitioner.
I have always admired the role played by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) in advancing psychiatric mental health nursing for better provision of mental care services (Allen, 2016). Members of this body uphold empowering core values such as inclusivity, collegiality, innovation, integrity, stewardship, and transparency, which I wish to achieve someday. Hence, I will employ all it takes to become a member of the APNA.
