Question One: ANA Functional Areas

Nursing informatics is a broad area that merges computer, information, and nursing sciences to allow better data, knowledge, and information communication in the nursing practice. According to the American Nursing Association, nursing informatics has several functional areas (Harrington, 2015). however, the areas that I am most interested in are education and professional development, as well as quality and performance improvement. ANA defines quality and performance improvement as the delivery of healthcare services meaningfully and effectively. In the event that a problem arises in patient care flow, I have the obligation to liaise with the quality improvement in my capacity as a nurse to make the process more effective. On the other hand, education and professional development are terminologies that imply training families, nursing students,s and nurses regarding information technology’s (IT) effectiveness. I am interested in this functional area because it helps in orienting, guiding, and teaching new nurses about electronic medical record (EMR) technology and its navigation.

Question Two: Identifying TIGER Competencies in Relation to ANA Functional Areas

TIGER is an acronym for Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform. TIGER is a broad area that is responsible for improving nursing education and practice via information technology (IT). The designers of the TIGER Initiatives envisioned a culture that would ultimately address the requisite skills that nurses would require in the 21st century (Fung, 2016). The rationale for designing the TIGER Initiative was to ensure competency in selected nursing informatics aspects among all nurses practicing in every domain. The initiative comprises collaborative teams cognizant of the work of non-governmental and governmental agencies to improve nursing education and healthcare with technology. The TIGER Initiative consists of three main competencies required by every practicing nurse, including information management, information literacy, and basic computer competencies (Fung, 2016). According to its recommendations, every nurse should acquire a European Computer Driver’s License (EDCL) before graduation from nursing school. EDCL ensures competency in basic computer skills. On the other hand, information literacy is an important skill for nurses that helps in the identification, location, evaluation, and application of pertinent nursing information as required. It entails the ability to apply evidence-based practice (EBP) and critical thinking skills to the nursing practice. Lastly, information management pertains to the collection, processing, presentation, and communication of pertinent data. Thus, I am likely to develop information management, information literacy, and basic computer skills because they are critical in providing top-notch patient care.

Question Three: Identifying the QSEN competencies

Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) is an initiative that incorporates safety and quality competencies into the nursing practice and education for every nurse (Sherwood & Zomorodi, 2014). QSEN aims at addressing the major challenge of assuring that nurses possess the requisite attitudes, skills, and knowledge for continuously improving the safety and quality of healthcare systems. I am confident in developing and expanding decision-making, interactions, and collaborations, delegation skills, improved priority-setting problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills. These competencies are in line with the ANA functional areas that interest me. They will help in providing top-notch patient care in nursing practice.
