Mental Health Discussion

What are your concerns or fears about mental health nursing in general? Are you interested in mental health nursing, or do you approach the topic with some anxiety?

My concerns are based on the perception of mental health nursing by our fellow nurses in other specialists. The inferiority perception they hold against mental health nursing as a less desirable career choice perceives us as inferior nurses in the profession and not real nurses. In addition, they term mental health nurses as crazy nurses in a field deficient in an advanced knowledge base and advanced skill set.

My interests in studying mental health nursing remain profound, and I approach the topic with no anxiety since I understand the negative stereotypes and stigma attached to mental illness in many cultures. My interests are grounded on my understanding of the valuable contribution mental health nursing can make to people’s well-being.

What do you feel are essential aspects of a good nurse-client relationship?

A good nurse-client relationship is centred on essential aspects such as respect and trust, ranging from small gestures like self-introduction to the patient and referring them by their names (demonstrating an air of friendship, approachability, and caring, thereby making the patient feel safe); maintaining eye contact and respecting boundaries/differences in personality and culture; displaying a genuine interest in the patient’s situation and life; and showing empathy.

Please include an example of how you established good rapport and a good professional relationship with a patient in the work or clinical setting. What nonverbal and verbal techniques did you use in this relationship?

A patient will always feel safe and cared for if the above-mentioned essential aspects are effectively addressed. For example, I once asked a patient who was pacing the floor while waiting for lab results, “Kyle, you stated that you’re feeling concerned about what the lab tests might reveal.” From this, Kyle, who was tensed, was able to cool down since he knew that his concerns were heard (genuine interest in his situation) and there was someone to offer help on the situation (expressing empathy). Eventually, I established a good rapport with Kyle, and I guided him through his healing process.
