Knowing your audience is an important part of capturing and maintaining their attention because if you don’t know your audience, how will you know what they like/dislike? Many people share the same interests, and by knowing the likes, dislikes, opinions and interests of your audience, you can easily keep their attention. If you begin to talk about something that is of disinterest to the audience, they will not listen. If your audience does not listen to you speak, the communication is instantly broken, and you will have lost the connection with your audience that allows you to get your point across.
What cultural considerations do you need to take into account for your particular audience/topic?
Being culturally informed about many different cultures that you commonly interact with will help you and your audience better communicate. You must first make sure to check your own biases you have of any culture before speaking to an audience. You also must not assume that your audience has the same world view as you. If you are speaking from the point of view of a rich male, then there are many people who will not be able to relate. You make sure to keep your speech from a worldly point of view. Nonverbal communication is also different in other languages; for example, a thumbs up might mean something different to someone of a different culture, so it is important to be aware of that (Buhler & Worden, 2013).
How are you going to keep the audience’s attention throughout the speech?
To keep the audience engaged, you have to start at the beginning of the speech. Start with something interesting to grab the listener’s attention. I will continue to tell a story to keep the listeners engaged and take them on a journey so that they will not be able to stop listening. Using different tones and emphasizing, and also telling some jokes and these tactics will also help keep them interested.
Find at least one example on YouTube, TEDx, or other video repositories of good attention-getting examples. Post the URL and explain how the video is a good model for capturing the audience’s attention. The video can be on any topic but must be appropriate for sharing.
This example is from the TEDx video called “Get comfortable with being comfortable”. The speaker Luvvie Ajayi Jones starts off strong and shocking to grab the listener’s attention by saying, “I’m a professional troublemaker”. That is not something you hear every day. She is not afraid to speak her mind at all and is authentically herself. She tells a story and uses many tactics to keep the listeners engaged.
