Social Media Discussion: Past, Present, and Future

The World Health Organization has defined obesity and overweight as the excessive or abnormal accumulation of fat that impairs an individual’s health (Nies & McEwen, 2019). According to the WHO, the global prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents and children aged between 5 and 19 years had dramatically increased to 18% in 2018 from 4% in 1975 (Jaacks et al., 2019). In 2019, approximately 38.2 million children below 5 years old were obese or overweight. The problem prevails both in low- and high-income countries and in my community (Blum, 2020). I believe the problem of child and adolescent obesity will only exacerbate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Children and adolescents are not allowed to play in schools or parks. They are more than likely engaging in lesser physical activity (if at all) at home than they did in schools and parks and probably eating more than they should. After the global pandemic is over or when it does ease, the issue of obesity and overweight will be a bigger concern than initially. My community will be no exception.

EHRs offer a unique opportunity for internal registries to be developed by health systems or contribute to external registries (Reisman, 2017). Using EHRs, I have extracted diverse types of information, including patient identifiers, diagnoses, demographics, medications, laboratory results, procedures, utilization events, and vital signs.

The above tweet is so timely, especially during this time when people are still on lockdown. For years, the average American has been too busy to make home-cooked meals and will often go for the microwave option. Americans have lived on fast food to meet their fast lifestyles. However, with most activities coming to a grinding halt, it is hoped that people have had time to reflect on their lives, including what they eat. That said, I agree with @plantbasedvibes that people need to advocate for healthier food options in their grocery stores. Foods known to contribute to terminal illnesses and curtail individuals’ health should be taxed higher to discourage stocking in stores. Conversely, healthier, fresher organic foods should attract little to no taxes to make them affordable to all living within communities.

Week 8 Discussion Post

There are many factors that will continue to impact community and population health.

  1. Consider the past achievements in public health as many have implications around the globe.
  2. Describe a global health concern that has impacted your community or those you care for.
  3. Discuss what surveillance data could be pulled from an electronic health record (EHR) you have used or currently use in your nursing practice.
  4. Take a moment to review the Twitter feed for compelling Tweets that are related to informatics, global health, and population health outcomes.
  5. Share an overview the Tweet and how it is likely to impact future collaborative trends in community health.
  6. Compose a 280-character or fewer Tweet that describes what you would like to see as a Tweet in the next decade related to public health achievements. Please try to be realistic, but also be visionary. Remember Twitter only allows 280 characters (this includes spaces, etc.) so you will need to be concise. It should include a hashtag. Include a reference URL if applicable. Share this Tweet in the discussion. (Note: A Twitter account is not required nor share your Tweet on social media).
  7. Your discussion post should look like:
    • Paragraph one: Describe a global health concern that has impacted your community or those you care for
    • Paragraph two: Discuss what surveillance data could be pulled from an electronic health record (EHR) you have used or currently use in your nursing practice.
    • Paragraph three: Share information from a Tweet and how it is likely to impact future collaborative trends in community health.
    • Paragraph four: Compose a 280-character Tweet that describes what you would like to see as a Tweet in the next decade related to public health achievements.
