Week 7 Assignment-Reflection in Action Paper

Nursing students need to have self-understanding through reflection on their experiences, feelings and aspects of care that impact their perspectives as advanced by nursing theories. As one undertakes a course, one reflect on what they have learned or how one has performed compared to their expectations and goals. As such, this reflection shares my experiences, thoughts, feelings and learning moments in the course based on different topics that we have covered.

Learning from the Course

Learning entails having exciting and challenging moments based on topics that one covers. Therefore, I believe that the course has offered immense opportunities for a reflection on what is critical to the nursing profession and an understanding of theoretical perspectives. The first topic in this course is evidence-based practice (EBP) and I believe that using the model is a critical aspect of effective care delivery as nurses incorporate cost-effective and relevant evidence to treat patients and offer the best care. secondly, the theory of human caring by Jean Watson is one of the major models that nurses can utilize to improve care provision (Watson, 2019). Rising evidence supports this model as care should be holistic and consists of all aspects that affect human life. Evidence shows that by using the model, nurses and other health providers demonstrate that caring is not only inclusive but expansive and circular. The implication is that by nurses caring for their patients, they not only care for their families but also themselves and the universe in general. Watson’s ten carative factors refine the Caritas processes by ensuring that love is at the centre of caring practices.

The third topic in the course addresses the need to protect human subjects in improving the quality or EBP projects and this is critical because effective implementation of either intervention is about benefiting humans or patients. Therefore, when implementers of both practices fail to protect human subjects who are beneficiaries of their interventions, they cannot attain success in their projects. Secondly, existing legal and ethical frameworks implore researchers and users of research findings to carry out their practices in the most ethical and lawful manner (Watson, 2019). The implication is that a reflection on this topic shows the need for all participants to attain benefits and not negative outcomes.

The IOM report in 2010 recommended the need for nurses to attain higher levels of education to be an effective and lead change in healthcare reforms and industry (Watson, 2019). Therefore, MSN graduates should participate in nursing research based on their level of education and speciality. These students have a critical role in nursing research as they seek to enrol on their terminal degrees. The next topic in the course discusses how to create and sustain an evidence-based nursing setting. While EBP is an innovative healthcare model, its implementation entails creating changes in organizations which imply that all stakeholders should participate in the effective implementation of the model based on the healthcare needs of an entity.

Further, compelling clinical questions are essential for providers to understand the health status of their clients as well as know the interventions that can work effectively with such patients. compelling questions show the level of care and quality outcomes that a healthcare provider is interested in for the benefit of a patient. A critical aspect of such questions is to attain key information that will guide the provider in making important care decisions and choices (Watson, 2019). Lastly, the reflection demonstrates the need for nursing students to embrace new and emerging trends that define care delivery based on Watson’s caring model.
