Introductions

Women, more than men, are more likely to have feelings of inadequacy. The world is more unforgiving toward women when it comes to meeting the standards of beauty. Despite beauty in nature and in the many everyday things, women are likely not to appreciate it, especially when they cannot see the beauty within themselves. Although the world is unlikely to change its perception of beauty as regards women, art can speak to individuals and help them see the beauty within and around them.

Inspiration Piece

The art piece is by Sharee Davenport and was created on the 24th of January, 2010. The art piece was posted on Flickr. The author noted that she took some pictures of her friends, Hannah and Cora, during the summer. The artist chose to get creative using a picture that she had from the past. The artist combined the features of different pictures to create the final piece. The artist removed the eyebrow and the eyelashes and then changed the color of the eyes. She then manipulated the tree silhouette pictures and water and used cloud brush strokes. The artist then layered all the elements on top of each other to create a final image that does not look like the original picture of her friend.

My Art Piece

The art piece I have drawn reflects what I see as beauty. The piece I drew shows that the beauty of life depends on how a person views themselves. The lady in my art piece is closing her eyes. If a person can see their inner beauty, they can see the beauty of the world around them. The pressure for women to meet unrealistic beauty standards has gone on for years. The definition of a beautiful woman varies from culture to culture, and what remains true is that these high expectations are a major source of pressure on women.

According to Huntley (n.d), the global report about women’s beauty from research carried out by Ipsos surveyed both males and females in the age bracket of 18 and 74 years. The survey was carried out in 27 countries across the globe, including South Africa, Brazil, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. The survey results can be summarized by what the British actress Audrey Hepburn meant when she said, “True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.” According to the Ipsos survey, people believe that intelligence; humor, confidence, kindness, and happiness are more significant in comparison to a person’s skin appearance, body shape or face, make-up, or hairstyle (Huntley, n.d)

Connection

In both pieces, the aspect of beauty that goes outside of the body is highlighted. In the original piece, the artists show the beauty of nature that a person can only see if they are intent on seeing it. The eye is open wide and is able to see deep, far, and high. The eye sees to the clouds and into the endless depth of the waters. In my art piece, the eye looks inwardly to the self to see the depth of a person’s beauty. The two pictures are in different mediums; the original combines digital images from an original picture, while my art piece is drawn with a pencil (Martin & Jacobus, 2018). The original piece impacts the viewers by allowing them to see life in many beautiful colors that depict the beauty of life. My art piece is done in pencil and welcomes the viewer to not focus on the outside but instead look from within and in the dark that is created by closing one’s eyes to see the beauty inside a person. It shows how simple the beauty of life can be.

Part 1: Art Creation
Select a photograph or film art piece to use as a point of inspiration. Create an art piece of photography or cinematography inspired by your selected art piece. Videos should be no longer than 5 minutes and must be in MP4 format.
