The Policy Process

The Policy Process

The policy process is needed in order to create effective and efficient policies. “Clear, well-written policies and procedures make sure daily operations reflect your long-term Business vision and mission statement” (Lohrey, 2017). The steps in the process that are needed, each as important as the next. These steps include formulating the policy, the legislature part of the policy, implementing it, evaluating it and analyzing it, and revising it if necessary. Each stage of the policy process helps ensure compliance, establish liabilities, as well as providing a positive environment for any facility. Policies help address important topics and concerns.

The formulating stage is basically the brainstorming stage. This is when ideas are thrown out; ideas are given on how to tackle issues. In this stage, the policymaking part of it is made up of two parts. This is the setting of the agenda and developing the legislation. Each has its importance and need for formulating a policy. The agenda-setting helps to produce proper assessments. In formulating a new policy, a specific idea must be given to set the policy. A researcher will be involved in formulating policies. They have to research the idea and guide team members in the process of writing the new policy. When ideas are thrown out, members have to determine if they work. Otherwise, they have to keep brainstorming.

Once an idea is given or formulated in the policy process, it goes to the legislation stage. In this stage, the legislators recommend specific legislation. An idea can be given, and proposals are carefully viewed, but they don’t always become a policy. The legislation part can take a long time to work on and be tedious work; patience is needed here. New ideas can be given, but amendments to existing policies can be made.

In the implementation stage, when the policy passes the formulation stage, an act of legislation is marked. The implementation helps so that a policy is not just ideas. This stage is primarily responsible for managing the undertaking of the policymaking process. Tasks can be easy and straightforward but can be time-consuming. There can be several actions in this step. This is the creation of the policy, the rulemaking, and the operation of the policymaking along with the evaluation of it. The stakeholders in this stage move to the executive branch, but the legislative branch might oversee the process, while the judicial branch mainly oversees the process.

In the evaluation stage, policymakers analytically gather, examine, and use basic information to answer questions about policies. The evaluation part of policymaking makes sure that the policy is effective and how effective it can be. Members need to ensure that all information gathered is supported. There are several forms of evaluation stages. There is process evaluation; this part evaluates the components of the policy and its intended operation. Outcome evaluation is designated to evaluate the extent of the policy and its results. Formative evaluation centers on gathering information and facts needed; this is done so that any modifications if needed, can be made. Summative evaluation is basically an outcome evaluation; this assesses any results that come from the policy. Cost-effective evaluation is used to compare the cost of managing a policy and any benefits that come from it, while cost-effectiveness compares any relative costs of running the policy. Legislative and executive branches will be involved in the evaluation of policies.

Most of the parts of the evaluation work with analysis. Members analyze how effective a policy is while gathering information. Administrators can work on analyzing the information. They will examine all the information and evaluate any options necessary. Managers will oversee the gathering of information on the analysis part of the policy and make sure they are effective. The revision stage of policymaking is the last step before a policy is implemented. A policy is evaluated in order to make any necessary changes, then revised if necessary. The revision stage makes the policymaking process easier to read.

Effective policies solve issues in the facility before they can arise. All these steps are necessary to give a facility the right framework. When each step is followed, a policy It becomes more effective and easier to follow. “Policies are important because they address pertinent issues” (Sanelli, 2018). Just like implementing policies in the workplace, the policymaking team needs to work together and implement the steps everyone is working on. Teamwork is effective and useful.
