The Patient’s Bill of Rights and Importance
The Patient’s Bill of Rights first came into existence in 1973 by the American Hospital Association and was later revised in October 1992. Khajelou et al. (2019) define the Patient’s Bill of Rights as a charter that guides patients on how they should be treated whenever they visit hospitals. The American Hospital Associating inspires health institutions to adopt and clarify the bills to suit different patient needs. This paper aims to discuss different bills of rights for the patients, such as advanced health care, confidentiality, and respect, among many others, and how important they are to patients.
As stated by the American Hospital Association, the patient’s bills of rights can be exercised on their behalf by trusted individuals such as family members in cases where the patient is unstable. Sharifi & Bazmi (2016) states that as much as these rights vary from one hospital to another, nearly all bills of right include the following elements:
Right to advanced health and hospital care-All patients have the right to be treated with respect despite their finances, age, religion, marital status, and sex. Advanced health care boosts a patient’s morale and assurance of things work out for them afterwards.
Right, to confidentiality-Patient has the right to discuss his/her health status privately with the doctors concerned. This right is critical when the patient wants everything kept by himself for the well-being of his reputation and avoids pressure from the outside.
The right to make decisions-Patients have a right to take part in their treatment recourse, especially where the patient cannot meet the stipulated treatment bills.
The right to complain and sue-Patients can air their grievances whenever dissatisfied, such as long waiting periods and poor health attention. The feedback is relevant in improving how health care is administered among different hospitals across the world.
Right, to access emergency facilities-Whenever, a patient is in great pain and agony; he/she has a right to access the emergency facilities to calm the condition.
The right to choose the desired health care-Patient has a right to access their desired physicians as well as birth options for women hence satisfaction and confidence in the health care system.
