The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a process used in the development of computer systems that an organization can use to produce efficient information systems that aid in its growth. Planning, systems analysis and requirements, systems design, development, integration and testing, implementation, and operations and maintenance are the seven steps in the cycle (Noonpakdee et al., 2018).

SDLC is used in healthcare to determine what a health facility needs to incorporate into a new system. Nurses should be included in the SDLC because they play an important role in healthcare delivery. This is due to their understanding of the day-to-day needs of patient care and what should be added or removed from a system to make it more efficient.

Nurses should be involved in the SDLC process breakdown as they help design a system that will be the most user-friendly in its application. This ensures that nurses are already familiar with the systems. Second, they aid in the development of a system that will be the most effective in facilitating the transmission of information from one facility to another within the health facility (Benton & Shaffer, 2016). Third, nurses should be involved in the implementation stage to ensure that it contributes to the delivery of high-quality healthcare systems to patients (Chung, Connor, Short & Hurtado, 2016).

Finally, the top management of health facilities should ensure that nurses are included in SDLC to ensure the validity of the systems created. The inclusion also ensures that changes are made ahead of time to ensure that the formation process does not take too long. As I am not currently involved in the process as a nurse, I hope that the facility where I work recognizes the importance of including nurses in SDLC because it contributes to how effective the system will be in the long run.

Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.

Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.

Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain the potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.
