Professionalism and Social Media

Professionalism and Social Media

Describe the posts or conversations in which you have engaged that might be considered inappropriate based on the professional standards of nursing

My social media pages did not reveal anything untowardly or unprofessional. I do not use any profanity or engage in endless debates with others. However, I noticed on one of my social media pages a picture I had posted with a ‘celebrity patient.’ The said patient had come to the healthcare facility, and I knew my friends would not believe I was half a foot away from him. I took a selfie and posted it with what I thought was a catchy phrase. The celebrity patient was unaware they were on my social media page. I had to pull down the post because I realized that it was not professional at all.

Discuss why nurses have a responsibility to uphold a standard of conduct consistent with the standards governing the profession of nursing at work and in their personal lives

Professional responsibility in the nursing field refers to the moral and ethical obligations that permeate the nursing profession. The standards are in relation to responsibility and morals, integrity, collaboration with other medical professionals, and patient care to effectuate social change. If a nurse fails to meet these standards of practice, such a nurse can be found to be negligent if such negligence results in patient harm. In most court cases, a nurse is found to be culpable of violating care standards in a lawsuit on negligence. This is referred to as malpractice (Grace, 2017).

Include a discussion of how personal conduct can violate HIPAA or be considered unethical or unprofessional

HIPAA regulations stipulate that patient information remains confidential. A patient’s privacy should be protected at all times, and a healthcare practice should ensure that all measures, including policies, are implemented to ensure that these take place (Edemekong, Annamaraju, & Haydel, 2020). Personal conduct can violate HIPAA when a nurse acts unprofessionally (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). An example would be when a nurse takes pictures of a patient and posts them on social media.

Based on the analysis of your social media, discuss what areas of your social media activity reflect Christian values as they relate to respecting human value and dignity for all individuals

I always ensure that I remain respectful when interacting with people on my social media pages. I do not have a double personality, as most people tend to do. Most people will want to display on social media often exaggerated lifestyles than they live in the real world. On the other hand, I want to strive to remain as authentic as possible. The Lord God created us in His own image, and I believe that is something that every human being should find comfort in. I would not want to be an impostor and create an image that is anything but what God made of me. Secondly, I stand for truth based on Biblical teachings. I am not afraid to air my views even when they are unpopular. The truth gives me the courage to share information boldly. Several times, I have had people send me private messages on social media, seeking further clarification on a subject. This is where I take the opportunity to evangelize to diverse people from across the globe. For example, when someone posts a picture of a sick person and says that we pray for such a person because the ‘devil/or the powers of witchcraft’ have caused the illness, I always post a sober reply. The sober reply is always and only based on Biblical truths. In such cases, some people will refute what I am saying while others will seek to know more and hence send me private messages.

Describe areas of your social media activity that could be improved

I want to be more consistent in my social media pages and provide content that can be helpful to those who read my posts. I have been thinking of starting a Facebook group that allows nursing professionals to answer any questions regarding their health. I believe this will allow for my knowledge to spread far and wide, as well as that of other nurses across the country. I believe this would be especially helpful for people who are unable to access medical care or are un-informed on where to get the best care at affordable prices.
