Professional Nursing and State-Level Regulations
Boards of nursing are government agencies that can be found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US territories. These boards’ mission is to protect the general public from unsafe nursing practices through regulation. This can be accomplished by approving which schools provide nursing education, issuing licenses to approved graduates, and enforcing nursing practice laws (Xue et al., 2016). This discussion will look at examples of how the board of nursing regulations impacts nursing practice and compare and contrast the Florida Board of Nursing and the Illinois Board of Nursing.
The Department of Financial and Professional Regulations in Illinois is the administrative body in charge of issuing licenses to qualified APRNs (Xue et al., 2016). To be eligible for APRN licensure, the candidate must hold a current registered nurse (RN) license and have completed a graduate-level course in one of the four specialities recognized by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR), which include CNM, CNP, CNS, and CRNA (Nurse.org. n.d).
Nonetheless, APRNs in the state of Florida must adhere to a variety of nursing laws and guidelines. The Florida Board of Nursing has authority over APRNs (FBN). Rather than Illinois, the FBN only sees three specialities: CNP, CNM, and CRNA (Nurse.org. n.d.) CNS is not a significant aspect of the APRN’s speciality field; rather, it is regarded as an enhancement to the basic RN license.
In summary, nursing practice laws and guidelines vary by state. In Illinois, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have limited authority to provide patient care. In Florida, the state and law restrict the APRN’s scope of practice by requiring supervision and team management in order to provide patient care (Nurse.org. n.d.).
