Reflective Journal Week 3

For an individual to enjoy optimal health, there must be effectively coordinated healthcare delivery within a robust public health system. A clear purpose of reducing disease burden, injuries, and disability and improving the health and functional status of chronic illness patients, such as diabetes patients, must be adopted by all healthcare sectors. This includes healthcare organizations, both private and public actors, as recommended by the Institute of Medicine (Ngiam & Khor, 2019)

In a meeting with my preceptor, we agreed that health care delivery, including chronic disease management, neglected health care services, inaccessibility of essential health care services, emergency preparedness, and competence of the workforce, should be scaled up, more so for diabetes patients. Despite the government’s effort to provide quality services to its citizens, healthcare systems are still faced with barriers such as cost challenges and poor quality of service. For instance, the United States government spends about $11,582 per person, yet the substantial national spending has not produced a superlative outcome, and this has even been worsening during the COVID-19 pandemic (Sklar, D. et al., 2018).

Numerous innovations, such as telemedicine and eConsultation, have facilitated patients’ access to diabetes care while observing COVID-19 containment measures. Others include team-based care, which ensures that diabetes patients receive their treatment on time in the healthcare system. All this aims at scaling up the quadruple goal of improving patients experience, cost reduction, and satisfaction of the caregiver (Mian, z. et al., 2019)

Diabetes patients should be encouraged to take medical insurance. Studies have shown that a publicly financed insurance cover is a threshold prerequisite for an entree of health services as it is associated with healthier outcomes for adults. This, therefore, results in early, accurate diagnosis and effective management of chronic and acute illnesses. Without the availability of comprehensive and affordable healthcare to all, adequate population health cannot be achieved. It is, therefore, the responsibility of governments to evaluate the available options to achieve universal health coverage for all.

Students are required to submit weekly reflective narratives throughout the course that will culminate in a final, course-long reflective journal due in Topic 10. The narratives help students integrate leadership and inquiry into current practice.

This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week students should also explain how they met a course competency or course objective(s).
