Positive or negative impact on our patient lives

Positive or negative impact on our patients’ lives.

According to Medical–Surgical Nursing textbook, mobility is “an individual to perform purposeful physical movement of the body. When a person is able to move, he or she is usually able to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), such as eating, dressing, and walking. This ability depends primarily on the function of the central and peripheral nervous system and the musculoskeletal system and is sometimes referred to as functional ability.” ( Ignatavius,Workman, Rebar. P.23).

Discharge planning starts from admission to the hospital. Patients are being evaluated, and it is important for the nurse before discharge to observe assisting personnel with patient mobility possibilities. It is important that patients are able to do their regular daily activities as long as possible without help, as long as it is safe for them, such as being taught how to take a shower safely. It is important to walk, so the patient needs to be educated on how to walk properly, for example, in the summertime, to walk early am and after the sun goes down. It will help them to stay hydrated and not to get dizzy in the heat. Physical therapists and occupational therapists can help the patient with boundaries and can arrange for a therapist at home, so they can show easy exercises in order to stay mobile as long as possible. Safety is the key; as long as the patient stays safe, then they can do whatever is possible for them to do it.
