The scholarly activity I participated in was a morbidity and mortality meeting on Non-communicable diseases. This is a multidisciplinary team meeting organized once a month by different health professionals to discuss disease burden and associated deaths. In the meetings, discussions revolve around conditions that pose serious threats to the livelihood of a community, for instance, the COVID-19 pandemic and non-communicable diseases. This team includes medical officers, clinical officers, cardiologists, surgeons, physical therapists, and nurses. In this month’s meeting, we focused on the global impacts of non-communicable diseases.

Globally, non-communicable diseases are the leading course of mortality, killing more people compared to other diseases combined. On the other hand, it is a leading course of disability in the world. Additionally, 80% of deaths globally in middle and low-income countries are associated with non-communicable diseases. However, the human and social effects of non-communicable diseases can be averted through cost-effective, well-understood, and feasible interventions. This is despite the rapid socioeconomic and technological growth in these countries. Morbidity refers to disease burden or medical problem caused by a particular disease. On the other hand, mortality is the state of being subjected to death by disease. Examples of non-communicable diseases are diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, hypertension, and stroke. The commonly affected age group by this disease is adults aged 30 to 69 years. In 2020, the global deaths attributed to NCDs were cardiovascular diseases ( 17.9 million ), cancer (9.3 million), respiratory diseases (4.1 million), and diabetes (1.5 million).


  • In the meeting, the following problems were identified:
    1. Tobacco use
    2. Physical inactivity/sedentary lifestyle
    3. Excessive salt/sodium intake
    4. High blood pressure
    5. Overweight/obesity


  1. Encourage physical activities. Many health benefits can be observed when an individual transit from a less fit category to the next fit category by becoming physically active
  2. Reduce the major modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, harmful use of alcohol, and physical inactivities
  3. Raise priority accorded to NCDs through international cooperation and advocacy.
  4. Strengthening of the national capacity, multisectoral actions, governance, and advocacy
  5. Development and implementation of legal frameworks to curb NCDs
  6. Encourage person-centered health care and universal health coverage
  7. Promote high-quality research and development on NCDs


The knowledge I acquired in this meeting will help me to develop the skills necessary for developing my career by strengthening my clinical know-how of NCDs and boosting my qualifications for a more challenging task (1.1). Through this activity, I was able to expand my knowledge on NCDs, their risk factors, their impacts on the community, and person-centered interventions for the diseases (1.3). This scholarly activity enables me to meet the professional competency role of nurses in the management of NCDs (1.4). I was also able to understand and appreciate the role of every multidisciplinary team that is involved in patient management (2.3). I also learned how to formulate a highly effective team of nurses in response to curb the burden of NCDs within our society (4.3). Generally, this experience will help me boost my confidence in patient management by appreciating how my nursing career fits in the broader picture of health care.
