Every empirical nursing research must outline the implications for practice. Research ensures that nursing is evidence-based, from which empirical research, influenced by practice evidence, is used in the subsequent nursing practice decisions and interventions (Polit & Beck, 2018). Nursing researchers also understand the fundamentally obvious link between reported nursing findings and practice. Therefore, the emphasis is on how to highlight and define these research implications.

Nursing as a practice discipline requires research to identify the best practice interventions, guidelines, and procedures for the specific practice, whether in education, administration, or patient care (Polit & Beck, 2018). As such, nursing implications entail the possible clinical consequences that will be documented from implementing the findings of a study. In all nursing research, a discussion section links findings with previous research, whether extending knowledge and understanding, challenging existing practice recommendations, or suggesting new methods for practice intervention. Likewise, research provides evidence that nurses use in responding to specific and inherent changes within the healthcare environment, government regulations, as well as patient populations. Through research, individual researchers introduce and make necessary discoveries that are crucial for improving nursing practice or even changing current practices.

The role of research stems from the need for nursing to be an evidence-based practice. This approach calls for the use of research results in clinical care and decisions. As such, nurses are called upon to base practice and decisions on research findings. Particularly published data and peer-reviewed research help nursing professionals as guidance and outlines the best practices within the field (Polit & Beck, 2018). Besides, to influence nursing practice, most of the research findings should be verifiable, free of bias, and reproducible when performed or undertaken under the same conditions.

For instance, Lee et al. (2016) focused their study on exploring the smartphone app’s influence on the perception of nursing students’ clinical decision-making and critical thinking competence within a care setting. This was a quantitative study whose findings confirmed the belief that nursing education is greatly influenced by information technology like the use of smartphones—employing mobile devices in learning increases knowledge and improves the critical thinking or decision-making capabilities of student nurses. The study has implications for evidence-based practice by outlining the importance of information technology in nursing education, more so in improving critical thinking skills, a competence needed for positive patient care outcomes.
