Nursing Discussion-Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disorder of the musculoskeletal system in which the bones’ strength is weak (Sozen et al., 2017). This results in an increased risk of bone fractures. Several risk factors for osteoporosis will be discussed. Females, individuals of Asian or Caucasian ethnicity, and family history are more likely to develop osteoporosis (Sozen et al., 2017). Other risk factors include lifestyle choices such as cigarette smoking, excessive caffeine, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and a low-calcium diet (Akkawi & Zmerly, 2018). Other risk factors include poor nutritional status, nutrient malabsorption, low estrogen levels due to menopause, oophorectomy, and chemotherapy (Akkawi & Zmerly, 2018). Furthermore, conditions such as arthritis, hyperthyroidism, a stroke that impairs mobility, hyperparathyroidism, and vitamin D deficiency can also increase the risk of osteoporosis (Akkawi & Zmerly, 2018). Finally, certain drugs such as heparin, phenytoin, and prednisone also increase the risk of osteoporosis (Akkawi & Zmerly, 2018).

Nursing management of patients with osteoporosis will involve evaluating the individual’s physical functioning and their ability to participate in self-care. Nursing care will involve encouraging weight-bearing activities (Porter et al., 2020). Nurses can also assist these patients with self-care activities whenever need be and provide ambulatory help for individuals who do not have a steady gait (Porter et al., 2020). In addition to this, nurses can provide patient education related to healthy dietary modifications, which include Vitamin D and calcium-rich diet, smoke cessation, limiting alcohol consumption, and finally, advising the patient on the benefits of adhering to the prescribed drugs since non-adherence to medications will lead to failure of the treatment regimen (Porter et al., 2020). While educating the patient, nurses should also evaluate any barriers, including limited access to healthy foods, language barriers, and limited income.
