Some decades ago, Peter Drucker coined the phrase knowledge worker to define a workforce shift from manual labor to an information-based workforce (Razzaq et al. 2019). Nurses can be classified as knowledge workers since the competencies of the practitioners who practice at the organization are linked to the management of knowledge. Nursing is a dynamic and challenging profession, and the healthcare systems are ever-changing due to continuous advancements in technology. The nursing profession often needs motivating leaders who are an essential part of transforming health care.

The Changes Since Drucker’s Time and the Role of a Nurse Leader

What has changed since Drucker’s time are the various ways in which information is gathered. The tools and ways to gather information gathered have evolved in different ways. These advancements have enabled nursing leaders to adopt leaders’ concepts as knowledge workers in a compelling manner. Nursing leadership roles have changed in numerous ways due to technological advancements. Nurse leaders anticipate individual and organizational needs and understand how to solve them. They can assess customers’ satisfaction through the diversified feedback systems involved since Drucker’s time hence determining the healthcare system’s success through the response (Ryan, 2015).

Nurse leaders assess the finance team’s feedback to decide on long-term development plans and future revenue sources and generate different payment systems. Through various technological advancements, nurse leaders can also ensure that all healthcare workers work by incorporating reward systems and promoting the work environment (Vitello,2015). Leaders’ evolving roles have led nurse leaders to assume knowledge workers’ roles as they continuously assess the available information and make informed decisions.

The Concept of Nursing Informatics

The continuous development of technology and data science will lead to new nursing careers in the future, such as nursing informatics, whose chief role would be to originate new knowledge from EMR and remote sensors, among other recent sophisticated technologies (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). The new technologies will take to account crucial data such as genomics and metabolomics that will be included in electronic health records. The nursing informatics experts will be held responsible for identifying possible ethical and nursing implications of relevant data. The application of IT, data science, and computer science in nursing will result in evidence-based practices instead of past research-based practices. Nursing informatics can be defined as a practice that integrates nursing with numerous information and analytical sciences to define, track, and manage healthcare data (Darvish et al. 2014).

How Collected Data can inform Knowledge

An example of a scenario where a nurse leader can benefit from collected data is to determine if the healthcare has enough physicians hence determining the quality of care. To achieve the health care records, the number of patients visiting the facility in a month will be captured by registering all patients in the EMR. From the data, the nurse leader can use clinical reasoning to judge if the number of visiting patients and the severity of their illness is equivalent to the number of nurses available in the facility and estimate its overall performance. For example, one can conclude that the facility is not performing to its optimal since it is understaffed.
