Nurse Leader and Manager Decisions

Nurse Leader and Manager Decisions

The DECIDE model is useful in decision-making in different fields. The nurse managers and leaders have the mandate to make critical decisions that determine the health and wellbeing of patients and the institution as well. The acronym stands for problem definition, criteria establishment, consideration of alternatives, identification of the best criteria, creation and implementation of an action plan, and evaluation, as well as monitoring of solutions and feedback when the need arises (Guo, 2008).

In a clinical setting, a patient complains about the food offered during breakfast. She states that the meal has too much protein and little vegetables. The nurse who is on shift states that the menu is not very flexible to accommodate all patients. Therefore, the hospital tries its best to ensure that patients have decent meals despite the constrained budget. However, the main alternatives to the issue are serving fewer proteins and more vegetable portions to the specific patient. The other alternative is to create menus that allow patients to choose their meals. The second alternative would cost more time and demand an expansion of the current meal budgets.

To expand the current budget, the hospital needs to involve the board of directors and key shareholders in the entire process, which prolongs the time of problem resolution. Thus, the best criterion is to offer each patient portions that do not match others. To implement the first alternative, the patients will be allowed to choose additional portions of less expensive items on the menu, such as vegetables and fruits. This alternative should suffice until a more permanent solution is found. The feedback will be sought first from the patient who complained initially. Other patients will be invited to provide alternative solutions, which can be adjusted to the needs of the greater patient population.
