When considering quality factors affecting today’s healthcare world, technological advancements must be prioritized. These advancements range from improved and faster equipment to instant communication with healthcare specialists to changes in the way health records are stored and accessed. Many advances have been made that are assisting in providing more quality and safe treatment to patients. “Numerous studies have demonstrated that health information technology can improve care quality, hospital efficiency, and financial performance” (Karahanna et al., 2019. para 1). One area where we have seen significant progress in this type of technology is health record digitization. This process allows for the elimination of many stored boxes of paper records, which not only saves storage space but also provides medical professionals, and even patients, with a faster and easier way of retrieving medical records securely from anywhere on the planet. Electronic health records (EHRs) have also proven to be beneficial in that all necessary information is stored electronically and can be easily shared with anyone involved with the patient. The use of EHRS eliminates the need for paper and can save time and effort for everyone involved. Files entered into these systems can be electronically stored and, if used properly, will keep accurate records on the patient, reducing the possibility of mistreatment and even malpractice. Many other types of technology, such as virtual reality devices, robotic and laser surgery, and gene therapy, have emerged to be beneficial.

Communication is equally important. Clear and correct communication is required for all aspects of providing high-quality, safe, and effective care to our patients. This quality factor is important not only for all medical personnel involved in a patient’s care but also for the patient and their families. Correct communication allows the patient to comprehend precisely what plans and procedures will be carried out and why. Those plans and procedures can only be carried out correctly if all members of the medical team understand their respective roles. “It has been demonstrated that strong communication among healthcare team members influences the quality of working relationships and job satisfaction” (AHRQ, 2017).

Collaboration is an important quality factor in health care and its success for the patient. In the context of healthcare, this refers to a group of medical personnel who collaborate for the benefit of the patient. Effective collaboration is built on everyone involved communicating clearly and sharing ideas and items that will help the client achieve the desired outcome. Depending on the circumstances, collaboration could come from a variety of people in various departments, including physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and anyone else who has a vested interest in the patient’s well-being. This interaction could take place in a common setting or by reaching out to those who are needed but are located far away from the patient. In today’s world, effective use of technology can make this possible.

Shared decision-making is an important quality factor that has improved in the medical field. Previously, physicians were solely responsible for determining a patient’s course of treatment; however, through shared decision-making, the patient is now considered part of the overall team and has an equal say in what is decided and the type of care they wish to receive. This process can assist the patient in understanding exactly what procedures are available to them, as well as helping their physician and nurses better understand what the patient expects to happen in their situation. Mistreatment and over-treatment can be avoided by sharing information and using clear and concise information. Shared decision-making can also help everyone involved understand what kind of insurance coverage the patient has and prevent treatments from being performed that are not covered and must be paid for by the patient.

Laws, regulations, and policies enacted at all levels of government are among the most involved and complicated quality factors for patient care. Laws are enacted to protect patients, and regulations for the healthcare and health insurance industries are in place. The regulations are created and enforced to ensure that anyone who requires access to the health care system receives safe, high-quality care. The basis for passing such laws or enforcing regulations and policies frequently comes from the healthcare system itself, and the agencies in charge of bringing these safeguards to life rely on members of the medical profession to help devise, plan, test, and monitor the rule in question to ensure it will be for the betterment of the patient’s quality of care.

To summarise, each of these quality factors, technology, communication, collaboration, shared decision-making, and laws, regulations, and policies, work in tandem and are critical to ensuring that the patient receives the safest quality of care possible. All medical personnel involved should have the mindset that the patient and their well-being are the single most important goal and that using these factors correctly and efficiently will help that goal to be achieved.
