Models and Barriers Assignment

Models and Barriers Assignment

Evidence-based practice is critical in the healthcare system. It helps to improve the quality of patient care and nursing practice (Alatawi et al., 2020). It is not only the responsibility of nurses and doctors but also of administrators. There are, however, numerous barriers to implementing evidence-based practice. My place of employment is a small community hospital. OakBend Medical Center is Fort Bend County’s only non-profit organization. This paper will go over the obstacles I’ve encountered, how I’d overcome them, and the model that might work in my institute of practice.

Obstacles encountered

Some of the barriers to using evidence-based practice are related to human and organizational factors (Houser, 2011). I have encountered two human factors in my hospital: a lack of knowledge about evidence-based practice and negative attitudes toward research and evidence-based practice. Prior to beginning my MSN program, I was skeptical of research and evidence-based practice. I was uninterested in research because I didn’t understand its significance. Furthermore, I was able to put what I learned into practice after enrolling in theory and research classes. In fact, I realized that a large portion of my nursing practice was founded on theory and research. In addition, many of the nurses I work with are unmotivated when it comes to evidence-based practice. Their negative attitudes toward research are due to a lack of time and administration support. They believe that research is unimportant in nursing. Overall, I’ve found that nurses in my hospital are resistant to change or new ideas.

Despite the fact that our hospital’s goal is to provide patient-centered medicine, many organizational barriers prevent the implementation of evidence-based practice. These include a lack of administrative support or incentives, as well as demanding workloads that leave little time for research (Houser, 2011). For example, our hospital has a geriatric medical unit called Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE). It was developed in response to research showing that early ambulation can reduce hospital stays. Patients on this unit are encouraged to get up and walk around at least twice a day, as well as eat in the dining room with other patients.

Nurses in this unit are underpaid and overworked. Furthermore, they do not receive an orientation that includes research to support the claim that patients on the unit spend less time in the hospital. As a result, they have been unable to establish the evidence-based practice that the administration attempted to implement. The administration does not provide bonuses or even lunch to employees to motivate them. Nurses on this unit are frequently understaffed and must perform extra duties such as ambulating their 5-6 patients and assisting them to the dining area. The nurses are overburdened and have little time for research.

Overcoming Obstacles

Nurses are the foundation of our hospital. To overcome organizational barriers, the hospital should first mandate that all nurses be properly trained.
