1. My idea of healthcare finance has changed after reviewing the Week 1 course materials. I expected us to major in the financial management function, but I learned that the course also covers the accounting function of healthcare finance and that these two functions are probably inseparable in the discussion of healthcare finance.
2. I thought that healthcare finance would only cover issues on healthcare management of money (accounting how money from patients is utilized), but from the four C’s of finance, I learned that other issues like costs, cash, capital, and control are also discussed.
3. I expect to gain a lot of things from the course over the semester. I expect to learn more about the different regulatory and legal issues as they apply to healthcare finance. The primary role of finance within health services, from the course, is to plan for, obtain and make use of resources to capitalize on the value and efficiency of the organization. I expect to understand why most healthcare facilities fail to provide the relevant services to patients, assuming that the role of finance is fully utilized.
4. The Right to Die video is a very disturbing video, revealing how individuals have been stripped of their right to live under the pretense of dignity, compassion, and rights, in this case, the right to die. The proponents of the right to die believe it should apply to terminally ill individuals who lead an “undignified” life, as they claim to over-depend on others, hence a burden to them. Most people with disabilities tend to depend on their loved ones, and so the justification of compassionate death for the terminally ill only implies that the people with disabilities should also undergo physician-assisted death to end their “undignified” life. In the practice of healthcare finance, the issues discussed in the video reveal a government that strives to cut down on its expenditure on healthcare services by declaring certain lives more worthy of living than others. This could imply reduced expenditure on healthcare, which could negatively affect the availability of resources and services available to patients. It also brings to light legal issues regarding personal autonomy as well as the morality of euthanasia.
