Fluid and Electrolytes Imbalance
Fluid imbalance occurs when a person loses a lot of water or fluids that the body can take in. Additionally, it also happens when a person takes in more water or liquid than the body can get rid of (“Fluid imbalance: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia”). Electrolyte imbalance is a disorder in the concentration of electrolytes in the body. Electrolytes usually play a significant role in helping in the regulation of fluid balance, oxygen delivery, and acid-base balance. Electrolyte imbalance results when an individual consumes too little or too many electrolytes. Electrolyte imbalance is caused by loss of bodily fluids through vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating (Lewis, By, Lewis, & Last full review/revision Sep 2018| Content last modified Sep 2018).
The body fluids have several essential body functions. They facilitate the transport of nutrients, hormones, proteins, and other molecules in the cells. Additionally, they also help in the removal of metabolic waste products and the regulation of body temperature. The importance of fluid and electrolyte imbalance is that it helps in the control and adjustment of excess fluids in the body (Lewis, By, Lewis, & Last full review/revision Sep 2018| Content last modified Sep 2018).
Hypervolemia is an isotonic volume expansion caused by the abnormal retention of water and sodium in the way they usually exist in the body. It is also related to excess fluid or sodium. Hypervolemia can be noticed in a patient when you see the following symptoms muscle twitching, crackles, distended neck, elevated central venous pressure, hypertension, shortness of breath, and sudden weight gain. After the treatment, the patient is supposed to understand individual dietary and fluid restrictions. Additionally, the patient is supposed to demonstrate behaviors of monitoring the fluids to prevent or limit recurrence. The nurse will follow the responses of the patients after the treatment and the vital signs of the imbalance. Additionally, the nurse will also monitor the intake and output of fluids of the patient to balance the fluids (Martin, Martin, & Martin, 2019).
