The requirements for continuing education include 40 hours of practice every two years. Two of those hours are required in a course relating to the prevention of medical errors, one in risk management, 2 hours in ethics, and 6 hours in record keeping. Ten hours of general Chiropractic Education (CE) hours are allowed in distance credits.

The educational requirements include a bachelor’s degree based on four years of study in a program meeting state requirements. In addition, before matriculation in a chiropractic college, at least three years of residence college work is required. Graduates from foreign colleges must have their transcripts evaluated by an accredited U.S. college.

The scope of practice allows the licensee to examine, analyze, and diagnose the human body and its diseases using any physical, chemical, electrical, or thermal methods and use of X-ray for diagnosing. Chiropractic physicians may adjust, manipulate, or treat the human body but are expressly prohibited from prescribing or administering drugs, performing surgeries, or practicing obstetrics.

Lastly, the board permits travel-to-treat to be licensed to practice in another state. Licensees are also required to carry malpractice insurance.
