Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) enables nurses to provide the care that patients require in an accurate and cost-effective manner. Healthcare Performance and Evidence-Based Practice
Incorporating EBP into healthcare operations, particularly nursing practice, is primarily intended to improve healthcare service quality and provide care that has been scientifically proven to be effective in terms of quality, safety, and patient outcomes. When patients visit hospitals, they expect to receive the best care possible based on the best evidence available. In nursing practice, there is no room for guesswork or trial and error, and nurses should be adequately trained to be experts in the use of scientific evidence to improve their care. Clinicians in healthcare embrace EBP’s interprofessional model, which emphasizes shared decision-making in clinical practice.
The Impact of EBP on the Quadruple Aim Factors
The Quadruple Aim has four major goals: improving population health, lowering healthcare costs, improving patient experience, and improving the work life of healthcare providers. EBP serves as a catalyst for the healthcare system to achieve the Quadruple Aim goals. When there is no support and no interprofessional collaboration, Nurse Practitioners and other healthcare providers can quickly burn out. EBP enables healthcare providers to meet their patients’ treatment needs while also increasing staff productivity. There is clear evidence that when providers use EBP in their care, patient outcomes improve, and healthcare costs decrease (Crabtree et al., 2016). EBP is regarded as a tenet of high-quality, cost-effective patient care by the Magnet program. This is evident in its encouraging approach to nurse development and the use of EBP to provide patient care and improve population health (American Nurses Credentialing Center, n.d).
There is a positive correlation between patient experience and the process of care at the practice level for both prevention and disease management (AHRQ, n.d). Improving the patient care experience entails applying existing scientific knowledge to clinical practice based on the needs of individual patients. This implies that when providers use EBP in treatments and care, patient satisfaction improves. Healthcare costs in the United States are high, and multiple readmissions and medical errors exacerbate the problem, limiting healthcare access and putting a strain on healthcare resources (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
Conclusion
Evidence-based practice allows healthcare providers to be empowered and experience greater job satisfaction. As a result, it can be said that it helps the healthcare system achieve the Quadruple Aim. Because it is based on scientific research studies, EBP is an essential problem-solving approach in clinical settings. EBP has a quadruple impact because it improves population health by providing accurate and evidence-based care to patients and reduces healthcare costs by eliminating errors and harm. Healthcare collaboration and shared decision-making improved the work lives of healthcare providers while also improving patient experience and outcomes.
