Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

In the health care system, many guidelines and recommendations are developed to inform health practitioners to improve the daily routines of medicine for the management of illnesses. Therefore, the focus needs to be put on the dissemination and implementation of these recommendations and guidelines as a way of empowering patients to make more informed choices due to their increased want in the treatment decision-making process (Melnyk, Gallagher, Zellefrow, et al., 2018). The purpose of this paper is to discuss potential feasible dissemination strategies that can be put in place with barriers these strategies might encounter.

Strategies

Developing user-friendly treatment manuals and practice guidelines as a strategy is crucial due to the interference of some Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) make, especially their transfer from the academic setting to the real-world setting. This is a way of making EBPs more accessible to line-level staff (Gallagher, Fineout, Melnyk, et al., 2011). For instance, when a resource that fosters the development of innovative practice in a research environment is parallel to the demands of patients, these manuals and guidelines, when enforced, a better solution is reached. Also, educating staff on skills and principles through pre-service education and in-service training programs for line-level staff as a strategy would properly enhance dissemination. It allows health professionals to learn the newly developed EBP approaches. However, improving organizational dynamics as a strategy would be difficult to implement due to the wider aspects it entails, such as team leadership and quality management.

Barriers

Lack of time due to busy schedules by the clinicians and resistance encountered when new EBPs are introduced due to cultures formed within the clinical operations act as barriers to these strategies (Newhouse, Dearholt, Poe, et al., 2007). To overcome such, having training technologies with high transferability from job sites to the practice environment can be prioritized as a way of utilizing the available time to adapt to new EBPs. Also, support from the administration is key to helping reduce resistance through the development of an organizational culture that supports EBP.

Conclusion

In conclusion, with the great promise EBPs offer patients in modern health care, the systematic strategies to disseminate recommendations to them, as outlined above, will enable health practitioners in real-life programs to guide the transfer of effective practices into the world. As a result, knowledge and the associated evidence-based interventions are spread on a larger scale. Also, problem-solving redundancies were reduced, and innovations were inspired.
