Developing a Care Plan

Developing a Care Plan

The project’s aggregate is the youth in Middle and High School in Miami Gardens. Based on the assessment results, various factors contribute to risky sexual behavior. Lack of strict dating rules from parents, partner coercion, peer pressure, and low self-esteem are some of the enablers of risky sexual behaviors. This paper proposes two priority nursing diagnoses based on the major health risks and provides strategies to address them. Disasters that might affect the aggregate and the management strategies as well as recommendations for a disaster supplies kit, are also provided.

Priority Nursing Diagnoses.

The priority nursing diagnoses for the aggregate are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and pregnancies. Engagement in risky sexual behavior, such as sex with multiple partners and unprotected sex, is associated with an increase in the cases of STDs. Examples of STDs include gonorrhea, syphilis, chancroid, herpes, human papillomavirus, and HIV and AIDS (Folasayo et al., 2017). Teen pregnancies are most likely to increase because youth engage in unprotected sexual activities with multiple partners. The two diagnoses: STDs and pregnancy, are very important. Early diagnosis of STDs will enable nurses and other healthcare providers to formulate strategies for curbing the diseases. Furthermore, early identification of pregnancy enables prenatal clinics to begin. Prenatal maternal care prevents pregnancy complications and facilitates the unborn baby’s well-being.

Strategies to Address the Diagnoses.

Sexually transmitted diseases can be addressed using various strategies. An STD like HIV/AIDS is managed by the initiation of antiretroviral therapy. Prompt initiation of antiretroviral therapy decreases the patient’s viral load and enables him or her to lead a quality life (Redfield et al., 2020). Patients should be educated on the importance of compliance with their medication regimen. Proper control reduces the viral load to undetectable levels. This is desirable because it helps to prevent the transmission of the disease. Other STDs, such as gonorrhoea and syphilis, are managed by initiating the appropriate treatment plan.

Provision of sexual education to the youth in Middle and High Schools in Miami Gardens is the other strategy. The youth should be aware of the enablers of STDs, such as sex with multiple partners and unprotected sex (Redfield et al., 2020). Abstinence is the best technique for preventing STDs. Youth should practice abstinence to the best of their ability—the inability to abstain warrants the use of latex and synthetic non-latex condoms. Condoms are effective in reducing the transmission of STDs when they are used correctly and consistently (Redfield et al., 2020). The educative sessions should include demonstrations on the appropriate use of condoms. Having one sexual partner decreases the risk of contracting STDs. Both partners must be tested before engaging in any sexual activity. Sexual education should entail the manifestations of the STDs and the prognosis. The aggregate should understand that diseases such as HIV/AIDs are lifelong.

STDs such as the Human papillomavirus and Hepatitis B can be controlled by vaccination. Human papillomavirus vaccination should be administered to children aged 11 years and above. The vaccine can also be initiated at age 9 and administered through the age of 26 (Redfield et al., 2020). Consent should be sought from parents of the youth in Middle and High School in Miami Gardens before the vaccines are administered. Just like STDs, teen pregnancies can be effectively reduced by abstinence and the use of condoms. Once pregnancy occurs, the aggregate should receive prenatal nursing care. The importance of prenatal nursing care must be emphasized. Prenatal care mitigates the risk of pregnancy complications and ensures the well-being of the fetus (Redfield et al., 2020). This is achieved by promoting safe medication use and providing supplements and vitamins such as folic acid that prevent neural tube defects.

The other strategy to address the problem of STDs and pregnancies among the youth in Middle and High Schools in Miami Gardens is involving their parents and guardians. Results from the assessment revealed that youth engaged in risky sexual behaviors because their parents didn’t enforce any dating rules. Furthermore, the results revealed that parents were too busy and detached from their children. Such parents spent only a few minutes checking up on their children’s academic progress rather than discussing their social lives. This contributed significantly to the sexual behavior of the youth. Parents should engage their children on matters concerning their sexual lives. They should set strict dating rules for their children and closely monitor the progress of any relationship. Furthermore, parents should educate their children on the dangers of risky sexual behaviors.

Disasters that Might Affect the Aggregate

The aggregate of the project is the youth in Middle and High School in Miami Gardens, Florida. Florida State is associated with various natural and manmade disasters. They include tropical storms, hurricanes, wildfires, power outages, floods, and tornadoes (Gearhart et al., 2018). Annual reports of wildfires in Florida are approximately one thousand. Wildfires are common during Spring and persist until Summer. During these seasons, dry lighting and high temperatures are common, hence the wildfires.

Hurricanes usually begin in June and persist until November. Hurricanes are associated with strong winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding. Tornados can occur singly or accompany storms and hurricanes. Thunderstorms and hail storms are common in Florida. Thunderstorms can cause power outages. Furthermore, they occur during a heavy downpour and increase the risk of flooding. Florida is ranked third in the number of annual tornadoes (Gearhart et al., 2018). Approximately forty-nine tornadoes hit Florida annually, with June being the worst-hit month. Power outages are attributed to the numerous natural disasters that occur in Florida. The State has been ranked first in the number of power outages.

Strategies for Handing the Disasters.

Different strategies can be used to handle wildfires. The strategies can be used in the mitigation of wildfires or during an actual wildfire. The first mitigation strategy is to avoid leaving fires unattended. Any source of fire, such as cigarette butts, should be disposed of carefully and ensure that they are extinguished (Gearhart et al., 2018). The other strategy is using fire-resistant materials when constructing buildings. Improvement of the landscape is the other strategy. This involves removing any dried branches, leaves, and other combustible material around buildings. The other strategy is purchasing fire extinguishers and acquiring the skill need to use them effectively. The building should have emergency exits, and evacuation drills must be done regularly. When a fire occurs, immediate evacuation should take place. When voluntary evacuation occurs, any patio lights should be turned on to increase the probability of being spotted.

Various strategies can reduce the destructiveness of hurricanes. Firstly, buildings should be reinforced to increase their resistance to hurricanes. This can be achieved by storm shutters and hurricane straps. Secondly, people should stay updated on the weather conditions by subscribing to channels that provide weather emergency alerts. Also, safe rooms should be constructed in buildings. These rooms offer protection when the occupants are unable to evacuate when a hurricane occurs. Additionally, when a hurricane occurs, power should be turned off to prevent the risks of electrocutions during flooding (Gearhart et al., 2018). The occupants should take refuge in the interior room, away from doors and windows; areas without windows should be avoided because they increase the likelihood of getting trapped.

Recommendations for a Disaster Supplies Kit.

A disaster supplies kit is essential to the survival of evacuees or persons in confinement before they receive help from officials. The kit should contain a first aid kit and manual, medications, personal identification cards, signal flares, flashlights, a map, important contacts of persons or places, batteries, a source of information such as a radio, and any other requirement deemed important. Subsequently, airtight plastic bags should be used when items are stored in the supplies kit, and the container of the supplies should be easily portable and labelled appropriately (Sopha & Asih, 2019). Also, food should be replaced regularly to ensure that it doesn’t go stale. Notably, the kit should be updated and modified regularly based on the needs of the family (Sopha & Asih, 2019). Additionally, healthcare providers should be consulted on the need to keep prescription-only medications. It is also important to note that immediate healthcare services may not be available during disasters.

Conclusion.

The two priority nursing diagnoses based on the aggregate health risks are STDs and pregnancies. They can be addressed by the provision of sexual education to the youth. Furthermore, appropriate treatment should be initiated. On other other hand, examples of disasters commonly occurring in Florida are hurricanes, tornadoes, storms, and wildfires. Occurrences of these disasters necessitate a disaster supply kit that enables evacuees and confined people to survive until they receive help.
