When beginning to conduct research to develop evidence-based interventions, one must have a spirit of inquiry. This is the first of seven steps in the EBP process. A spirit of inquiry is a genuine curiosity and persistent questioning about how to improve current practices (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). When someone has a spirit of inquiry, they are more likely to enjoy the research process and see it through to the finish to improve the quality of care to patients. The second step of the EBP process is to ask a compelling clinical question in the PICOT format. PICOT format is as follows: P, patient population or problem; I, Intervention or issue of interest; C, control or comparison groups; O, outcomes of interest; and T, timeframe (Walters, 2018). Third, the researcher critically appraises the evidence from the search process. This entails asking questions about the validity, reliability, and applicability of the research (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). The best evidence is then integrated with the researcher’s clinical expertise in combination with patient preferences in an effort to make a practice change. Next, the outcomes of the practice change are evaluated and modified based on the evidence. Finally, the outcomes of the EBP change are disseminated (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).

From this course, I learned about the complete process of EBP. I had some basic knowledge of EBP, but I did not fully know the in-depth process required to develop practice change. From my classmates, I was able to learn about a variety of topics that I would have probably never thought about. After reading the variety of PICOT questions outlined by my classmates, each topic had me wanting to learn more. From my own work, I was able to develop a PICOT question that I was passionate about, which made doing research and writing about said PICOT question enjoyable. I learned a substantial amount of information about formula feeding and breastfeeding practices and their impact on obesity later in life that   I did not previously know about. From this course, my peers, and my own research, I will be able to carry my new knowledge with me throughout my current practice and in my future practice as a family nurse practitioner.
