Cultural Humility and Competence

Cultural humility entails reflection and critique of oneself. It begins with self-cultural assessment and identity before learning about other people’s cultural practices and customs. The knowledge helps to improve relations between a professional and a client. It helps to create a tight-knit fraternity at the workplace. Knowing a community’s cultural healthcare practices is vital for any healthcare service provider who intends to work effectively in that particular community.

This study focuses on Mexican cultural health customs and healthcare practices. The majority Mexican population depicts Hispanic cultural beliefs and customs. A Mexican woman was subjected to an interview to reveal basic information on Mexican healthcare customs. The interviewee identifies herself well with the Hispanic culture. She portrayed a deep understanding of Mexican traditional healthcare practices. The interviewee revealed the Hispanic cultural definition of an illness as discomfort caused by an imbalance between the person’s body and the environment. This changes the spiritual, emotional, and social state of an individual. Based on this perception, illnesses can be classified as either cold or hot. Cold illnesses cause narrowing of the blood vessels, a condition known as vasoconstriction, which results in slow metabolism. Hot illnesses are characterized by dilation of the blood vessels leading to a high rate of metabolism.

There are also folk illnesses like antojitos that can be given cultural remedies. For instance, Hispanics believe that failure to satisfy cravings in an expectant woman can cause harm to the unborn child, which can be genetically manifested. The remedy is the satisfaction of the cravings during pregnancy (Sarmiento et al., 2020).

Many Hispanics prefer institutional healthcare providers to home-based care, while others like to seek the services of traditional healers known as curanderos. The patient’s kin’s religious faith is important in understanding and finding a solution to an illness. A patient’s religious beliefs also play a pivotal role in healthcare. For instance, one can heal rapidly if he/she believes in God. Healthcare is deeply integrated into social networks. People can also seek relief from female neighbors, massage therapists, herbalists, midwives, and friends.

Giving a special diet like chicken soup, tortilla, or a mixture of rice and beans laced with lard to a patient can make him/her feel better. Some Mexican community sections believe in the importance of seeking prenatal care for pregnant mothers, while others perceive pregnancy as a natural process that does not require regular prenatal care. Disease prevention is given little priority in the Hispanic culture. Post-mortem practices are highly discouraged.

Cameron et al. (2017) found that communication also plays a crucial role in Mexican health care. The display of respect is very important in the Hispanic culture (p. 265). Healthcare providers need to address a patient with a lot of respect, which is expressed in greetings. A doctor can get accurate background medical information from a patient through a respectful greeting. A patient’s identity can be confirmed by addressing them by their first name. Healthcare must show etiquette, which calls for a warm welcome, attention, and knowledge of the native language.

Conclusion

From the interview-based case study analysis, it is vivid that competency is dependent on cultural humility. Health care needs a deep understanding of the patient’s cultural background information. This is vital for accurate diagnosis of the client. It ensures the proper treatment of the patient.
