Childhood Trauma And Natural Disasters

Childhood Trauma And Natural Disasters

Following an earthquake or other natural disaster, families face a variety of challenges, including loss of life, homelessness, and property destruction, among others. Following the disaster, the victims, or rather the survivors, require a great deal of assistance to improve their lives. When families are made homeless, they will need a place to live in order to resume their normal lives. Natural disasters cause some children to be separated from their families. As a result, they would require people to look after them. Because children have been separated from their families as a result of the disaster, they will require basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and education; the community or, rather, society should work together to ensure that these children receive the necessary assistance. (2011) (Eyeshine)

Children are frequently traumatized in the aftermath of a disaster. As a result, it is critical to protect children from the consequences. This can be accomplished by providing entertainment and fun foods such as snacks, candies, juices, toys, and other forms of entertainment that will comfort the children and make them feel that someone cares about them regardless of the disaster. (2011) (Eyeshine)

Another type of assistance that the children may require is the provision of cleaning supplies. Children will require sanitation and other forms of hygiene; therefore, cleaning supplies such as bleach, soaps, gloves, masks, buckets, and other necessary cleaning supplies are required. It is critical to recognize that time and care are the most valuable resources that an individual can freely provide. The victims have stories to tell about how the disaster occurred; therefore, it is critical to listen to their stories with compassion. If you are not in the affected area, assist sponsoring corporations in bringing books and therapy to the victims. This would benefit the children by comforting them, improving their lives, and making them feel at ease (Save the Children USA, 2011).

Finally, natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis have a significant negative impact on the communities affected. They can have long-term consequences for children and are frequently traumatic. In the absence of treatment, children may develop PSTD and be vulnerable to long-term psychological distortion as well as emotional distress. As a result, it is critical that communities band together to provide the necessary assistance to natural disaster victims (Save the Children, USA, 2011).
