Psychology-Analysis of Social Policies

Psychology-Analysis of Social Policies

Social Problems in the Community

One of the social problems existing in the community is child abuse and neglect. As the population increases, cases of child abuse and neglect also increase. Factors such as poverty and drug abuse contribute to child abuse and neglect. Increased cases of child abuse and neglect have made the social problem an issue of concern. Children are the majority of the population that is affected. Various policies have been developed to deal with the problem. However, the policies developed to deal with child abuse and neglect are few, and therefore the problem is not fully addressed (Armondi, 2020). The policies available are not able to deal with the social issue. Furthermore, the policies only focus on one aspect of child abuse and neglect, leaving out other important aspects. Most of the programs and policies on child neglect and abuse emphasize prevention alone, leaving other important aspects (Bazurli, 2020). Most of the policies dealing with child abuse and neglect are developed and implemented by the federal government (Chambers & Bonk, 2013). Major causes of child abuse include poverty, drug and substance abuse, and poor social structure in the society. Densely populated areas such as towns are the most affected by the social problem.

Program or policy designed to address the social problem

The major cause of child abuse and neglect in society is poverty. Therefore, policies to address the social problem should focus on reducing poverty. Most of the policies in the United States dealing with the eradication and reduction of poverty are created and implemented by the government (Bazurli, 2020). One of the policies in America that reduces poverty levels is the Urban Policy. The Urban policy focuses on the economic and social development of urban areas in the United States, reducing the gap between the poor and the rich (Hill, 2020). The policy is implemented in areas where most people have low incomes. Implementation of the policy will reduce the poverty level, which will reduce child abuse and child neglect cases.

There are various programs and strategies under the urban policies that deal with child abuse and neglect. Programs such as education under the urban policy increase literacy levels of people, which helps eradicate poverty and equip people with knowledge on reducing child abuse and neglect. Children, women, and people of low socioeconomic status are the most beneficiaries of the Urban Policy (Bazurli, 2020). Through the eradication of poverty, people in urban areas are able to protect children from child abuse. The people will also be able to meet the needs of their children, and therefore, cases of child neglect in families will reduce (Chambers & Bonk, 2013). Through the policy, women and poor people are also empowered, which helps to deal with child abuse and neglect.

Goals and objectives of the policy

The main goal of the urban policy is to reduce the levels of poverty in urban areas. The policy, therefore, ensures that all people have access to health, food, and good housing. The urban policy aims to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor (Bazurli, 2020). The policy ensures social welfare for vulnerable populations, especially the poor. The policy focuses on ways to ensure the growth of towns through proper planning (Bazurli, 2020). The policy concentrates on social development and urban planning. The policy also supports and advocates for the rights of the vulnerable people in the society, such as children and those living in extreme poverty. The other aim of the policy is to ensure that all people have equal rights in society. The other objective of the policy in urban centers is to encourage innovation of better ways of reducing poverty (Imbroscio, 2019). The policy empowers the poor by ensuring they get financial support, which improves their lifestyle. The policy also aims to improve the health status of people in urban centers by eliminating conditions such as typhoid. These diseases are expensive to manage and may increase poverty levels. Ideally, the policy ensures that all people have access to food and other basic needs, which helps reduce poverty. Reduction of poverty in society reduces the cases of child abuse and neglect in the community.

Mission Statement, the form of benefit and service delivery

The mission of the USAID urban policy is to lead in the development and management of disaster by partnering and investing in activities that reduce the level of poverty and save lives. The policy through the International Development Agency also aims at ensuring democratic governance and aiding people to emerge from the humanitarian crisis. The urban policy comes with some form of benefit to the population (Hill, 2020). The policy includes some social changes that led to benefits. One of the benefits of the policy is the childcare benefit. Other benefits included the transformation of the structures by the government. There are also social amenities for children, such as the construction of better schools for children. The vulnerable people in the society received education and better health services. The poverty levels of people in urban areas are, therefore, reduced.

As the population in urban center increase, poverty levels also increase, and therefore need to reduce the poverty levels. The policy helps poor people to meet their basic needs, especially social and health needs. The policy also addresses the economic needs of the poor people in urban centers (Bazurli, 2020). Ensuring equal rights for all people is another service where the policy ensures transparency (Hill, 2020). Therefore, the policy ensures social welfare for all people in the urban areas.

Comparison with other programs

There are a lot of similarities between the eligibility criteria for the policy and those of other programs. One of the programs that are similar to the urban policy is the Medicaid program, which also is implemented in the US. The two are similar in such a way that both improve the lives of people by ensuring there is access to better health and basic needs (Hill, 2020). The programs also focus on the poor in the community to improve life. The other program similar to the policy is the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which ensures that all people have equal access to health services.

Recommendation to improve the quality of the Policy

One of the recommendations is that the policy should create awareness of the issue of child abuse and neglect. The policy helps reduce poverty levels, but creating awareness of child abuse and neglect is essential. Through creating awareness, people can be taught ways of reducing and dealing with child abuse and neglect. The policy should use mass media and social media to create awareness of the social problem to the general public. Awareness will increase and make the policy effective in addressing the needs of the children, especially those from poor backgrounds.
